Tark Dal Recipe

This is one of my favorite ways to eat lentals (Dal). This is a savory lentil soup, that is garnished with a spicy topping of onions tomatoes, mustard and onion seeds.

Lentil Soup (Dal) Ingredients

2 cups red lentils
1.5 quarts water
1 tablespoon chili power
1 tablespoon Garam Masala
1 tablespoon Salt
1 Lemon (Juice)

Tarka Ingredients

1/2 small onion
1/2 tomato or cherry tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon onion seeds
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper (optional)

Lentil (Dal) Soup Directions

Add all ingredients, except lemon juice, to a large pot, bring to a boil, and then simmer for about an hour, until lentils are smooth. When done cooking, stir in the lemon juice.

Tarka Directions

In a small skillet, cook onion and mustard seeds in oil for about 30 seconds, until they begin popping out of the pan. Then brown the onions, tomatoes and peppers, in the same pan, until onions are transparent.

The tarka is spooned onto the soup.
